On February 14, 2018, a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people were killed and many others were injured. The students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have responded to this tragedy with strength and determination. They are organizing rallies and protests, demanding that lawmakers take action to prevent future shootings.
The students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are not alone.
In light of the events that have taken place in Charlottesville, Virginia, the University of Notre Dame stands together with our students, faculty, staff, and alumni in condemning the hatred, bigotry, and violence displayed by white supremacists and other hate groups. We reaffirm our university’s values of respect for human dignity and diversity and we call on all members of our community to oppose these forces of hatred and bigotry.
Since the election of Donald Trump, there has been an increase in racist and xenophobic incidents across the United States. On November 15th, 2016, a group of students at North Dakota State University (NDSU) were targeted with racist remarks and threats. The students, who are all members of the North Dakota State University chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), were called “n*****s” and told to “go back to Africa.
